How can we improve usability and decrease anxiety for our users? One year after Rakuten NFT launched, research indicated it was time for some updates to the platform.

Beginner's guide for Rakuten NFT's POG explaining how the users NFTs can be used to earn points from real world horse racing

As a member of Rakuten's horizontal design team, I focused primarily on Rakuten's NFT project. As a mature project, we gathered data from user testing/interviews and raw data such as sales, listings, and bounce rates.

Increasing usability - Making the beginners guides clearer and easier to search for relevant information

Since most of Rakuten NFT's users are new to NFTs and because Rakuten NFT operates differently than other NFT markets, such as Open Sea, there is a need for a beginner's guide.

We received feedback that the guide that was originally designed failed to answer all of the user questions and users needed to scroll through the whole guide to find answers to their questions.

Guided by user feedback, I re-designed the beginner's guide to be less wordy and to include anchor links to relevant sections. I also implemented a back-to-top button that was added on all pages to improve navigation on longer pages.

Reducing user anxiety - Preventing errors in the listing flow by adding new confirmation screens

Our user testing revealed another pain point for users. They wanted more assurance when listing NFTs on the C2C marketplace.

I proposed adding a new confirmation screen after talking with the business department to get the full scope of the problem.

The new screen allowed users to confirm their listing and the profit they would receive before placing their NFT on the C2C market, which reduced the sense of anxiety created by the previous flow.

Constraints, constraints, constraints - Keeping in scope, designing for development, and working within a design system

The main constraint in working on these updates was time. All updates needed to be mocked up, approved, and handed over to development within a short time period to stay within the project's roadmap.

The designs also had to maintain a consistent style. NFT had a robust design system but was out of date so while working on the designs I was also updating the design system allowing the rest of the team to work faster with the latest versions of the components.
